The initiative to formulate a strategic vision for the Rio Manzanares comes with the need to give extra value and structuring this natural axis of the city of Santa Marta and the region itself, which has been forgotten for decades. The Manzanares River goes down from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, through the center of the city and empties into the Caribbean Sea; Along its 9.5 kilometers it crosses the urban area and goes through many urban settlements.
The current administration contract design 9 neighborhood parks in order to improve the current conditions of some existing parks and to recover some spaces that were lost as a public space, four of the nine parks are part of the river system. The strategy of defining a system of public space stems from the need to integrate the river into the city, to make it visible and accessible. Such a strategy is comprised of a series of interventions seeking to become active centralities for citizens. This is the first prototype park that begins to weave such system of public space.
